Well Warped Tour has come and gone, and I am reveling in its impact left on me. Warped Tour 2014 at Tinley Park included many great performances. Let’s get started with a set by set walk through of my day at Warped Tour

State Champs

While I was not very familiar with the band before their opening set, I feel obligated to check them out in the future. They had good energy and the crowd that arrived early feeded off that and looked like they were having a good time. Although probably my least-favorite set of the day (that was a pretty easy task to accomplish), it was still solid and a good start to the day.

Yellowcard acoustic

The next full set that I saw was a very special acoustic set by Yellowcard. Only a limited number of people were able to get into the Kia tent to even seen them play and I am so happy I was a part of that group. The band opened with Rough Landing Holly (which is my all-time favorite Yellowcard song) and played three other songs which included Always Summer, With You Around, and Ocean Avenue. Yellowcard is fantastic at performing acoustically and this set was no exception. The highlight was probably the aforementioned opening song even though it was funny when the band called out two Falling In Reverse fans for leaving before they played Ocean Avenue.

Bad Rabbits

BtBmbUTCIAAgfRa

Bad Rabbits was the surprise of the day, bringing the funk to the Warped Tour. These guys were just a blast to watch. They seemed to have so much fun on stage and the choreographed dance moves made their act stand out from the overwhelming amount of generic metalcore at the festival. I definitely recommend that everyone check this band out, especially if they want to get their funk on.

Yellowcard

Yellowcard’s second set of the day was another reason why I think they are one of the best live bands in the scene today. They had an extremely tight set, playing songs like Way Away, Awakening, and of course Ocean Avenue. The only minor criticism that I could give is that the band did not play any songs off Lights and Sounds during the set. It is pretty nit-picky considering that the band only got 30 minutes. Anberlin’s Nate Young did a great job on drums and I hope he joins the band full-time once Anberlin is finished. Yellowcard was one of the many great performances of the day.

Less Than Jake

BtBnGs1CcAApTt_

Less Than Jake, being of course the token ska-punk band, put on a typically awesome ska-punk set that has been expected from this band for many years now. They came out swinging with a lot of energy and that never let up for the entire set. A massive pit went on continuously while the band was playing. The band cranked out hits and fan favorites and my favorite was a high-octane performance of All My Best Friends Are Metalheads. Less Than Jake may be one of the oldest bands on the tour, but they sure are not playing like they have any steam over the years.

Saves The Day

BtBnXL0CAAAk-7t

After Less Than Jake, I ran over to Saves The Day’s set, hoping not to miss much. Unfortunately, I missed most of At Your Funeral but the rest of the setlist more than made up for that. The band did not really talk much, but that was good because they were able to play nine songs. That was more than any other band I saw that day. The highlights were Shoulder To The Wheel and a excellent cover of the Weezer song El Scorcho. The only downside was that no one showed up to this set, which is disappointing because they did a great job.

Teenage Bottlerocket

BtBnqC9CQAA6-uT

These punks did an awesome job and it was nice to seen actual old-school punk on the Warped Tour. They had good energy and was just a lot of fun to watch. It was a shame that the band had such a small crowd, especially in spite of all the complaints that Warped should add more “real” punk.

Bowling For Soup

BtBoPb7CIAIRjoX

BFS proved that they are one of the funniest bands in the scene today. Their set was incredibly tight and highlights including the Phineas and Ferb theme song and a really awesome performance of Punk Rock 101. The band the Summer Set did come out to play Girl All The Bad Guys Want. Although the band did do a good job, I would have rather just seen Bowling For Soup play it. Still, it was an incredibly fun set and a good time all around.

Anberlin

BtBoZmpCAAA7xx-

What a shame. Anberlin was fantastic in closing out the 2014 Vans Warped Tour. It is just so sad they are going away after this fall. They played great and a highlight was when the PA went out on them but they just kept playing on. That shows how much of a class act they are. RIP Anberlin, we will miss you

The Swellers tweeted today “We had our first band practice twelve years ago today. It’s been an amazing run. Booking some farewell shows soon. Thank you.”  The Swellers have been consistently great and have always played with good bands.  I wanna thank them for great years of music.  Great guys, great band, and great career!

At their final show of the current tour, MxPx frontman Mike Herrera announced that the band will be releasing the MxPx acoustic collection sometime in July. No details yet on the official release date nor the official tracklist for the album. However the album should be a nice treat for MxPx hardcore fans and fans that are newer to the band.

15 Years of Enema of the State

Image

Enema of the State, Blink 182’s third studio album, was released June 1st, 1999.  In a couple of days the album turns 15 and that is a big milestone for the 7x platinum album.  Loose Lips Press decided to do a little commentary to give an homage to the album.  Happy Birthday you 12 track bastard!

Head Writer, Christopher Lepore says-

“I can safely say that Blink 182 has affected us somehow and someway.  That is the beauty of a band like Blink 182.  They are a band that I can say that I will force my kids to listen to. I can’t say they are for all ages, only because my mom hates them.  The word I am looking for is, timeless.  Almost like a nice band of blokes from England you might of heard of, The Beatles. I only compare them to The Beatles, because of how I was introduced to music.  I was introduced to Rock n’ Roll with The Beatles. With Punk Rock, it was Blink 182.  They are timeless because of how I can relate to the band.  That is the main reason the album itself is terrific.  This album was written for guys who are 30 years old now, but somehow every kid in High School can relate to them.  What is so cool about this album is the song order.  They go from a funny song about a girl loving a dick; to a song about someone who suffered from depression.  It is just an album that changed me as a person and changed the music scene.”

Tony Geravesh of Stickup Kid says-

“It’s a timeless record, that’s the great thing about any music is that there will always be a generation of people who grow into an album.  My favorite track from that album is probably Going Away to College.”

17 year old of New Jersey Andrew Khantzian says –

“I can absolutely relate to the album.  Most of the songs are easy to relate to because of their basis of singing about High School problems.   Wendy Clear is my favorite song on the album.  I feel like the song is about the American teenager relationship.  We all get into a relationship that we know is not going to end well, but we are too stubborn to tell ourselves that.”

Album Review #5: Colorchange- Thieves

By Christopher Lepore, Staff WriterImage

Thieves’ Colorchange is an EP that drops June 3rd, but Loose Lips Press got an early taste of the Texas pop-punk band’s new music.

Thieves opens their EP with the fast paced and sad song  “Smoke Signals”.  A song about moving on.  It is a terrific song to open up the EP, because it gives us an awesome look at what we are getting into.  An EP excellent lyrics, vocals and music.  After Smoke Signals comes their single Colorchange.  This is a fun song that I picture in that indie movie everyone likes.  The song “Compass” follows and that is a slight step down.  I am not hating on it, but I would love to see how it sounds acoustically.  Following “Compass” comes my favorite, “Tunnel Vision”.  This is a perfect song for most of the teen youth today.  If you are a fan of The Wonder Years music, you will love this album.  It relates to people who have trouble getting through tough times.  It explains to us that everything will eventually end, but we cannot dwell on sadness.  Ending the album is the song “Weight”.

I give this EP a 4/5.  This was well produced by Beau Burchell (Bayside, From First To Last, The Bled, Name Taken, The Bronx, Moose Blood) if you are a fan of The Wonder Years, this is a band to check out.  These guys are going far!
